Default

Trading Term
  1. A failure to meet an obligation such as a payment of interest or principal. Technically the borrower does not default. The initiative comes from the lender who declares the borrower is in default.
  2. For commodities, this is the failure to perform on a futures contract as required by exchange rules, such as failure to meet a margin call, or to make or take delivery.
