Protective Put

Trading Term

An option strategy in which a trader buys a put option for an underlying security that is already owned by the holder of the option. The purpose of this strategy is to guard against a drop in the price of the underlying. For example:

  • Long 100 Shares XYZ
  • Buy 1 XYZ Put
