Buy-In

Trading Term

A buy-in occurs when the borrowed shares required to support a short sale are not available or are recalled by the lender, and no shares can be found for borrowing. The short seller is then required to buy the shares at the prevailing price, which may negate the potential profits of the short sale strategy of selling high and buying low at a later date.
