[US] Nonfarm Payrolls

Trading Term

The key labor market report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics each month is called the Nonfarm Payroll Report and measures the monthly change in employment across a variety of economic sectors. This measure of report excludes farm labor, which is seasonal. The report includes the rate of unemployment as well as the number of people available for work. It tallies the number of people in work by sector. The report is critical because the labor market is sensitive to the health of the economy and can be used to predict whether the central bank may feel the need to change its monetary policy stance.
