Deflator

Trading Term

A deflator is used to determine changes in volumes after accounting for changes in prices. For example, if prices double for a basket of goods and the dollar value of sales for the basket of goods doubles, the use of the deflator would indicate that without the change in prices, sales would be flat. A deflator is used when measuring GDP.
