What are some of the exciting R trends happening this week at RStudio Conference in San Francisco? Which open-source tools in Data Science, Finance and Visualization will be of interest to quants? Read below to find out.

Data Science

  • J.J. Allaire, Founder and CEO of RStudio, will engage the R community and demonstrate how open-source software for data science helps for reproducible research.

    What we will learn?
    What role RStudio will play and how its structure and organzation will support the community to deliver open-source tools.

Finance

  • S&P Global Market Intelligence Group Senior Director of Financial Engineering, Moody Hadi, will discuss tackling unstructured big data and how it might affect data sets.

    What will we learn?
    Practical applications of R packages or technologies such as connect, reticulate, TensorFlow, Scikit-Learn and Shiny in the context of deep learning techniques are utilized to extract meaningful financial information.

Visualization

  • Univeristy of Pennsylvania Data Analyst William Chase will demonstrate a series of design techniques that form what he calls a Layered “Glamor of Graphics.”

    What will we learn?
    How to use ggplot to tackle geoms and astetics, ultimately designing beautiful and persuasive graphics.
  • Dr. Tyler Morgan-Wall from the Institue for Defense Analysis will showcase rayshader package.

    What will we learn?
    How to use rayshader, and principles of cinematography and animations to create 3D ggplots.
  • Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg from Google will deliver a keynote on “Data, visualization, and designing with AI”.

    What we will learn?
    How People+AI Research (PAIR) initiative at Google engages the R community in areas such as optimizing data visualization techniques and creating practical guidelines for designers. Fernanda, who is part of Google Brain, and is a computational design expert, showcases an astonishing portfolio of projects on her website www.fernandaviegas.com.
